The Southeast Texas Watering Guide: Baytown vs. Beaumont Soil
If you’ve lived in Southeast Texas for any length of time, you know that the ground beneath your feet can change significantly just by driving thirty minutes in either direction, down I-10. At Olguin Bros. Landscaping, we’ve spent over 40 years working with these local landscapes, and we know that a one-size-fits-all watering schedule is the fastest way to stress your lawn.
Whether you are in Baytown or Beaumont, here is how you should be adjusting your lawn maintenance routine for a healthy yard.
The Baytown "Gumbo" (Heavy Clay)
As you get closer to the coast in Baytown, the soil tends to have a much higher clay content—often referred to as "Black Gumbo."
The Challenge: Clay is incredibly dense. It holds onto water for a long time, but it takes forever to absorb it. If you water too fast, it simply runs off into the street.
The Strategy: Use the "Cycle and Soak" method. Instead of watering for 20 minutes straight, water for 10 minutes, wait an hour for it to soak in, and then water for another 10. This prevents "drowning" the roots while ensuring moisture actually reaches them.
The Beaumont Mix (Sandy Loam & Silt)
As you move inland toward Beaumont and Sour Lake, the soil begins to shift. While there is still clay, you often find more sandy loam or silty deposits.
The Challenge: These soils drain much faster than the heavy clay in Baytown. During a 100-degree Texas July, this soil can dry out completely in a matter of hours, causing your grass to "crunch" and go dormant.
The Strategy: Focus on Deep Root Saturation. Water early in the morning (between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM) to minimize evaporation. You want to water long enough that the moisture reaches at least 6 inches down, encouraging your grass to grow deep, heat-resistant roots.
Pro Tips for Both Regions:
The Screwdriver Test: Not sure if you’ve watered enough? Try to push a long screwdriver into the soil. If it slides in easily, you’re good. If it resists, your soil is dehydrated.
Watch the Leaves: If your St. Augustine grass blades start to fold in half like a taco, they are thirsty!
Mulch is Mandatory: In both Baytown and Beaumont, 2-3 inches of hardwood mulch is your best defense against the Texas sun.
